How to install and configure Zenoss?

Postby chandranjoy » Sun Mar 13, 2011 3:08 pm

Installation and configuration steps of Zenoss Monitoring system:
This installation of Zenoss was done on a CentOS 5.5 machine but it support variety of Operating systems . Zenoss is an Enterprise Monitoring software used to monitor CPU, memory and swap usage, imagine installing mrtg with rrdtool without any hassles.

So let's begin:
1. Prerequisites: You must have mysql5-server running, net-snmp and net-snmp-utils installed in order for Zenoss to run properly.
If those packages are not present, install them using yum.
# yum install mysql mysql-server net-snmp net-snmp-utils

After snmp installation done, set snmp string and restart the snmp daemon.
vi /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf
rocommunity ZenoSS
/etc/init.d/snmpd restart

2. Download and install the latest Zenoss rpm/bin package from Sourceforge.
Download Zenoss 64bit binary installation file for CentOS 5.5: ... ux-x64.bin

3. Start Zenoss by restarting mysql daemon and zenoss itself
# /etc/init.d/mysqld restart
# /etc/init.d/zenoss-stack start

4. I don't have any iptables rules so I don't have to open any port, so if you're using a firewall you need to open the ports needed by Zenoss to operate. Modify /etc/sysconfig/iptables and add the following:

-A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 8080 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m udp --dport 514 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m udp --dport 162 -j ACCEPT

Make sure you restart iptables after saving the changes made.
# service iptables restart

To launch Zenoss, open your browser and type the following in the address box -->

The default username and password is admin and zenoss respectively.

That's all there's to it!
